About Life'sWork of WPA

Mission

Life’sWork of Western PA’s mission is to continue its comprehensive and innovative role of assisting persons with disabilities or other barriers to employment to achieve independence and dignity through productive employment opportunities.

Organization’s History

It all started in 1927 as an “experiment” to find out if women who were “handicapped by housework and children and could not leave their homes” could contribute to the family budget. Women were trained to be seamstresses, and their finished garments were featured and sold at fashion shows hosted by the region’s socialites. By the late 1930s, the organization responded to the effects of the Great Depression and began serving immigrants and disabled war veterans. Called the United Vocational and Employment Service, the agency’s mission was “to value the self-respect that comes to the handicapped person as a result of being self-supporting.”

Times have changed, but Life’sWork’s mission remains the same. Evolving with the changing needs of the community, today Life’sWork serves individuals with disabilities, both adults and youth, as well as people with other barriers to employment, including at-risk youth, single parents and people transitioning off public assistance. Headquartered in the Uptown Section of Pittsburgh at 1323 Forbes Avenue, the agency also has offices in Westmoreland and Fayette counties.

Programs and Activities

Life’sWork provides comprehensive and individually-tailored vocational services to adults and youth with disabilities, at-risk and adjudicated youth, and individuals transitioning off public assistance, such as evaluation or assessment, case management, training, job coaching, career exploration, and job placement, retention and advancement.
